Statement




We are the organizations signed below call on the government of the Kurdistan region to strengthen freedom of opinion and expression, by giving effect to the laws, including the law of press action, which made clear the rights and obligations of journalists, and not to bypass it by using other laws that narrow the freedom of opinion and Expression.

According to law no. (6) of 2008, "the law on the prevention of the abuse of communications devices in the Kurdistan region".
The law contains penalties for a minimum of six months and not more than five years and a fine of not less than million dinars and not more than five million dinars or one of these penalties for any person who abuse the cell phone or any wireless or wireless devices Or Internet or email.


This is contrary to some of the provisions of the law no. (35) of 2007, the Kurdistan Press Labour law, which states that " the opinion of the journalist or the information published by the journalist cannot be a reason to question him Or his rights."


In addition, the law provides that " no crime if it is published or written in the works of an employee, a public service or a person of a public service or a person of public representative status if the publication does not exceed the work of the post, the public service or the representative, on the condition that the publication does not exceed the


Therefore, we believe that the use of another law in cases of "publishing crimes" harms journalists and is an attempt to shut down and use the law to avenge journalists.


While we declare our solidarity with journalists, but that does not mean that we are against the submission of complaints to the courts in media cases by the affected persons or institutions, but we are still because it is an urban situation, but we are against the use of law b An arbitrary form to reduce press freedom.


We request the judiciary to rely on the investigation of publishing cases based on the law no. (35) of 2007 the law on press action and the release of journalist is what who has been detained for investigation in accordance with the law on the prevention of abuse of communications devices and Consider other files within the framework of the press action law.
