DW is an abbreviation of two German words (Deutsche Welle) which means (German wave). It began operations in 1952 with DW Radio. Their radio broadcasts were in English and German, and the project was then franked into an independent television channel. They also have a website in more than 30 different languages, as well as an academy for training journalists.
DW is a semi-governmental institution, funded by the German government, without government interference in its policy. DW has its own academy in addition to training, they work in partnership with German universities and award master's degrees to their students.
