Metro: The rules should be the basis of the treatment of the
government with press freedom, information and thought.
Sulaymaniyah, May 3rd 2024: on world press Freedom Day Metro
Center asks Kurdistan Regional Government to assess its own behavior, make the
laws of journalism, right to access information and organizing demonstration
principals in dealing with freedom of media, information and opinions.
UNESCO this year with "a press for the planet: journalism in
the face of the environmental crisis” slogan celebrated world press Freedom
Day, stresses on the role media has in dissemination of information and
delivering it professionally, with the purpose of spreading awareness among
individuals. However, also shows the challenges in facing misinformation, hate
speech and exposing secrets.
On this day, where the world pays respect to its journalists
and media workers and assess the conditions of press freedom in their
countries, Metro Center thinks that it’s important that the KRG relying on the
reports of the local and international organizations assess its own performance
and function and take needed measures to expand the freedoms and make
journalism law, right to access information and law of organizing demonstration
a principle in behaving with freedom of media, information and freedom of
opinions.
While the KRG celebrates this day with the world, having
independent media and paving the ground for not making it without pressure,
threats, and obstacles are very important.
Unfortunately, despite the many attempts and civil pressures
inside and outside till now, Kurdistan region and Iraq have an environment for
doers of violence against media workers and journalists to escape, like how law
can’t reach murderers.
(Soran Mama Hama, Sardasht Osman, Kawa Garmiani, Mamosta
Abdulstar, Arkan Sharif, Widat Hussain) are living proof of those victims, that
the doers or planners of those crimes, known or unknown, walk freely among us.
Honor for the journalist martyrs of Kurdistan
