Those who Killed (Kawa Garmiani) Were Sure They Would Escape Punishment



December 05, 2013: Metro Center for Journalists Rights and Advocacy condemns the killing of the Journalist (Kawa Garmiani) and announces that those who killed (Kawa) were sure they would escape punishment.

In the evening of December 05, 2013, a number of gunmen in a car stopped outside the house of the editor-in-chief of Rayal Magazine and Awene reporter in the town of Kalar and shot him. He was taken to hospital and died of his wounds.   

The Director of Awene Company for Meida, Asos Hardi told Metro that, "We hold the force of the area accountable for the killing of our reporter and his perpetrators must be found.” 

Metro Center for Journalists Rights and Advocacy announces, in a country where the crime of killing journalists pass without serious investigation and punishment, people will dare to attack journalists in public and in secret. It emphasizes "that group of gunmen, who killed Kawa, was sure their crime would go unpunished.”  

Kawa Garmiani had a number of cases at Metro Center, and in one of the cases he was provided with a lawyer by the Center for Legal Protection of Journalists.

 One of the cases had links with a high-ranking commander of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Metro published a statement for the public and expressed its point of view on July 25, 2012.
 
Metro does not want to accuse any party by reminding the past, especially when a serious investigation has not been carried yet and the relevant court has not decided. However, Metro finds it necessary to ask the PUK for explanation.  

Kawa Muhammed, known as Kawa Garmiani, 31, was married and is known as a courageous person. 

Metro Center for Journalists Rights and Advocacy is an independent and non-profit organization. It was founded in mid 2009 in the city of Sulaimani, by a group of journalists and lawyers (Razaw Sharif, Hiwa Osman, Amar Shabandar, Twana Osman, and Rahman Gharib). Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) supported the center until the end of 2010. The Center held its first conference on July 2010, in the city of Erbil, in which the Board of Administration and Management Council were elected.
