When the president embarrasses you

US President Donald Trump's aggressive speech last week against journalists and outlets critical of his policies is shocking, describing the Justice Department as a tool of personal revenge, attacking political opponents and prosecutors، if we had this scenario here, we would say, "These repression and restrictions pave the way for violence against the media and critics.”

The US president's anger at some of the country's media institutions, attacks on press freedom in contemporary US history are unprecedented, Donald Trump ignoring the principle of separation of powers and their independence, within the (Department of Justice) attacked journalists, I don't think any other president has dared to use the pulpit of this ministry to resolve political and personal problems in this way.

US President Donald Trump has attacked some media outlets that broadcast programs critical of his decisions.  "I believe 97.6 percent of the comments on CNN and MSDNC are negative about me. They are the two political wings of the Democratic Party. They are very corrupt and illegal. What they are doing is illegal,” he said.

In the United States before and after President Trump, the president cannot deviate from the constitution and knows that even the media, whether they have party financial support or not and are close to its policies, the constitution will defend them, when a president-elect feels he has suffered from critical programming and newsroom policies, the constitution protects the media.

In addition, President Donald Trump ordered the suspension of some services of VOA, following the signing of an executive order to downsize the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), an independent US government agency funded by Congress, supports VOA, Radio Free Europe and Al-Hura.

On March 19th, 27 international organizations issued a joint statement calling for the protection of these journalists and their rights, in short, under US law, USAGM's functions are different, and their independence must be protected.

These attitudes and discourses create an unpleasant feeling in Arabic (شعور بالحرج) among those who work in US institutions in the region and are our friends, even for diplomats who defend freedom of the press around the world. It also does not guarantee that aggressive discourse against journalists will not become a daily practice and a real threat to freedom of the press, which has been a constitutional right in the country for 234 years.
